Why get it done in the UK?

Researching hair clinics can be like tip-toeing through a minefield – the internet is saturated with glossy websites with suspect before and after photos. Cost plays a crucial role in making a decision when it comes to a hair transplant. It can be cheaper to go abroad to places such as Turkey, but a hair transplant is life changing and a bad decision can leave disastrous and permanent results, which could cost more to repair. As such, it’s not something you would put in the hands of anyone but the very best. Across the UK, everywhere from Manchester to Glasgow, doctors and hair transplant clinics have certain standards they must adhere to. Doctors need to be fully qualified in order to perform such specialised techniques. However, as the UK is the centre of innovation, you can always ensure that you’re getting a transplant using the latest technology.

How much does it cost?

Cost is a hard one to pin-point as it’s measured on a few factors, such as how many grafts are required to be extracted and implanted, how much time is needed and who is performing the surgery. At Harley Street Hair Clinic, the procedure is performed by one dedicated doctor, whereas at a cheaper clinic the surgery may be performed by a few nurses to keep costs down. However, as a guideline you should expect to pay £3,000 – £7,000 for 500/1,200 grafts and £6,000 – £9,000 for 1,200/2,880 grafts. In my case, I had 2,000 grafts extracted at a cost of £8,500, over a two-day period.

Which celebrities have had the procedure?

In a world where we look to celebrities for inspiration, one of the deciding factors to go with the Harley Street Hair Clinic was the fact that  was performed there. As well as footballer Steven Fletcher and vlogger who had his transplant performed at the clinic earlier this year. Once a taboo, Wayne Rooney paved the way for more male celebrities after he admitted to having the procedure at the age of 25.

Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not. I’m delighted with the result.

What’s the procedure like?

My hair transplant took place in early November, after a few consultations at the clinic with director Nadeem Uddin Khan, where my donor area (back of the head) was examined for strength and density and my recipient area was examined to plan the implantation process. My doctor advised a transplant of 2,000 grafts over a two-day procedure, lasting eight hours per day. The big day started off with having my head shaved, which confirmed how badly I needed the transplant. After the area was cleaned and I was given local anaesthetic, my doctor, who performed the whole surgery over the two-day period, individually extracted the hairs from the back off my head. After 1,000 hairs had been extracted over a four-hour period, the doctor spent the remaining four hours implanting the hairs to the bald areas at the front of my head. This same process was repeated on the second day.
