Making the decision to undergo a hair transplant can be a big step, but it is a step that more and more people are choosing.

However, unless you know what to expect, the recovery process could be quite surprising. We offer here a more detailed description of what happens after FUE hair transplantation.

The process

To obtain the most aesthetic results, we use the follicular hair extraction technique, often FUE abbreviated. FUE hair transplantation is one of the most modern techniques and offers excellent results with the shortest recovery period.

This leaves a linear scar and sutures using the trichophytic closure technique.

Immediately afterwards

You can see the shape of your new hair root immediately after the FUE transplant with the follicles implanted in their new position. However, visually, this may not be as beautiful as expected, as there will be crusts around each follicle. Since none of the incisions are more than one millimeter in length, the crusts will be small and will heal quickly.

Although the trauma of the donor site is minimal, there will be some side effects such as swelling. This is only temporary and will be solved in a few days. With some other hair transplantation techniques, such as FUT, there is a risk of numbness in the donor site. It is also temporary, but it can last several months before being solved.

You may have slight pain or pain at the implantation site. Any swelling of the forehead will decrease in a few days and you can quickly resume your usual routine.

The surgeon will advise you on the best way to take care of your transplant to maximize your chances of success. This could include raising your head while you sleep and do not wash your hair or shower. As long as you follow the surgeon’s recommendations, the transplant will be quickly implemented within 5-7 days.

There’s no reason why you cannot go back to work immediately, but you may prefer a week. Physical exercises can also be restarted during this first week, provided the surgeon does not tell you otherwise.

Short to medium term

About two weeks after FUE surgery, you may be horrified to find that all your newly transplanted hairs are falling. Do not worry, this is part of the procedure and does not mean that transplants have not taken root.

Hair grows from a follicle. When we talk about hair transplantation, what do we really mean by transplanting follicles? When the follicle moves, it temporarily blocks hair growth while it is in its new position. Old and drooping hair is a natural and essential part of the life cycle and allows new hair to grow on the transplant site.

Hair grows only about 1 cm a month; your new hair may therefore take a long time to become visible and the hairline will start to look like the desired result. After 4-5 months, you should start to have a good idea of the final appearance, but it may take up to 18 months for the full hair transplant to be visible.

Depending on the time of year of the transplant (or holiday plans), in the first weeks it is advisable to wear a sunscreen or a high factor sunscreen.

Long term

Once your new hair has grown and developed normally, you can treat your transplant area exactly as you would the rest of your follicles. You can cut your hair in a month and then, if you wish, you can dye it.

A hair transplant is a permanent procedure and the results are for life. A year or two after the end of the procedure, no one will know that they have undergone a FUE procedure and will not have to limit the hair options in any way.

Other treatments

We can also provide conditioner shampoo for specialized follicles to reactivate the transplanted follicles. You can also offer other treatments for hair loss and hair loss, such as laser or vitamin therapy, to help establish transplantation and encourage displaced follicles to start growing again. Ask your surgeon for more advice on what will be most appropriate for your particular case.

A FUE hair transplant produces excellent natural-looking results and recovery time is minimal and usually without complications. Understanding what to expect can make sure there is no panic when your hair falls out or when it takes months to get the thick, shiny hair you hoped to get.
