FUT Hair Transplant Method

FUT Hair Transplant Method

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) is a hair transplantation technique based on the principle of transplanting hair follicles from the donor area in state of strip in the 90s. The FUT method, with the advancement of technology in hair transplantation operations, is now an almost obsolete technique.

In 2002, the FUE method was introduced into the medical literature and gradually replaced by the FUE method. Although the FUE method is preferred in most hair transplantation centers, FUT method is also applied in some exceptional cases. So what is FUT Method? How is it applied?

FUT Hair Transplant Method Application

As is known, there are 2 basic methods in hair transplantation operations which are accepted by medical literature. These are FUE and FUT methods. The difference between FUT method and FUE hair transplantation method is the way of collecting hair follicles from the donor region. The way of collecting hair roots from the region of the nape which is considered as the donor region separates these two methods.

In the FUT method, the donor region (nape region) is first anesthetized by local anesthesia for hair follicle collection. This prevents the person from feeling pain during the operation.

  • A rectangular piece of skin about 15 cm x 2 cm is removed from the numbed nape area. The size of the area to be cut varies according to the amount of hair follicles desired to be collected. For example, the area of the skin that will be removed by cutting due to a small number of grafts will be smaller. In addition, if the person’s hair density is low, it may be necessary to remove a larger piece of skin for the same number of grafts.

  • The part of the skin removed from the nape region; In order to separate the hair follicles and prepare them for sowing carefully, they are subjected to the extraction process by nurses. Grafts separated from the skin pieces are placed in containers called ‘petri’.

  • When the collected grafts are prepared for sowing, the area opened in the patient’s nape area is closed with an aesthetic suture and bandaged. After about 20 days to 1 month of healing, there will be a horizontal stitch mark (in the nape area between the two ears). One of the major disadvantages of this method is the seam trace which is not fully healed after the operation.

  • After the collection of the grafts will be started planting process. In order to do this, the canals are opened by local anesthesia in a transplant area due to the number of grafts. In hair transplantation, these channels are the holes in the size of the needle head where the hair follicles will be placed.

  • After the grooving process, hair follicles are placed in the opened channels, thus hair transplantation operation is finished.

In this method, the cut hair follicles leave suture trace in the nape area , while in the FUE method, the individual collected grafts do not cause any deformation in the nape region. However, while the FUT method can be performed much faster, in FUE method, the collection process of hair follicles are slower. Thanks to the micromotor introduced in the FUE method, this process time has been reduced as much as possible.

Who can apply the FUT method?

This method can be applied to anyone suitable for hair transplantation:

  • More than 22 years old,

  • Hair transplantation has reached a certain level,

  • Having permanent hair loss,

  • Anyone with adequate donor area and good general health can make hair transplantation.

The same conditions will be taken into consideration in the application of the Follicular Unit Transplantation method, but the decrease in the use of FUT in the present time causes this method to be preferred in special cases for different reasons. Some of these are:

  • If you go to a doctor who only applies this method, your hair transplantation will be done by FUT method.

  • If your hair density in the donor area is very low, this method can be recommended by the doctor to collect more grafts.

  • Due to reasons such as retouching, this method can be used if a very small number of grafts are to be collected.

  • This method can be preferred in order to avoid damage to the hair follicles in cases where the hair in the donor area is extremely dense.

  • FUT hair transplantation method, which is an old method, can be preferred by the patient because it is cheaper.
